Workplace Ergonomics
In introducing Joanne Wells, CWA Local 6201, Mark Franken and David LeGrande
Provided a brief background not regarding the many years of work CWA has worked to ensure that employers were providing the union’s members with ergonomic working conditions. However, given the present Bush Administration’s revocation of the OSHA Ergonomics standard, employers have been very reluctant to work with the union on these issues.
With that in mind, Joanne discussed a project that she had been working on for a couple of years. She was contacted by researchers employed by a firm known as Avazzia. Working on behalf of Local 6201 members who use computers to perform their jobs, in this case service representatives, Joanne was asked if she would be interested in participating in and recruiting members to participate in a clinical investigation of the company's BEST-RSI™ device. This equipment is designed to provide non surgical relief for pain and strain related to repetitive motion illnesses such as carpel tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. The BEST-RSI™ device can be held by the worker and applied directly on the affected and painful area of the body.
After approval from her local president, the pilot investigation was initiated. THE INITIAL RESULTS INDICATED A 99% POSITIVE RATING.
